A few weeks ago I went to the Nailphilia exhibition at the Degree Art studio on Vyner St, East London – the UK’s first ever exhibition completely dedicated to the phenomenon that is Nail Art.  And by that, I don’t just mean WAH-esque polka-dotted nails. Oh no, I’m talking acrylic-extended, diamanté-encrusted, Fimo clay-sculpted Nail Art.

That same weekend, the 7th annual Nailympics took place at London Olympia: a competition where nail techs from across the world compete to produce the most bonkers, outlandish and frankly ridiculous nail creations! A couple of weeks before that, the Daily Telegraph dedicated a chunk of its Saturday luxury fashion supplement to celebrate the outrageous nail, with a shoot of the work of London nail tech Ting Mazza.

As a long-term enthusiast of acrylic talon enhancement myself, I have to wonder if such ‘Nail Art’ has completely shaken off its niche, dare I say tacky, vibe? If the high-fash pack have embraced the outré nail, and pop stars like Rhianna and Gaga are leading the way, then we all shall follow right? What are you waiting for, get down the nail salon!
